The R6551 is designed as asynchronous communications interface adapter (ACIA) which provides an easily implemented, program controlled interface between 8-bit microprocessor-based systems and serial communication data sets and modems.
It has many features. The first one is compatible with 8-bit microprocessors. The second one is full duplex operation with buffered receiver and transmitter. The third one is data set/modem control functions. The fourth one is internal baud rate generator with 15 programmable baud rates. The fifth one is program-selectable internally or externally controlled receiver rate. The sixth one is programmable word lengths, number of stop bits, and parity bit generation and detection. The seventh one is programmable interrupt control. The eighth one is program reset. The ninth one is program-selectable serial echo mode. The ninth one is two chip selects. The tenth one is 2 or 1 MHz operation. The eleventh one is full TTL compatibility. And so on. That are all the main features.
Some absolute maximum ratings have been concluded into several points as follow. The first one is about its supply voltage which would be from -0.3V to +7.0V. The second one is about its input voltage which would be from -0.3Vdc to Vcc. The third one is about its output voltage which would be from -0.3Vdc to Vcc. The fourth one is about its operating temperature range which would be from 0°C to +70°C. The fifth one is about its storage temperature range which would be from -55°C to +150°C. It should be noted that stresses above those listed may cause permanent damage to the device.
Also some AC characteristics about it. For 1MHz the first one is about itscycle time which would be min 1.0us and max 40us. The second one is about its address set-up time which would be min 120ns.
