Description

PerkinElmer laser ignited devices incorporate miniature lenses to efficiently focus laser light into explosive material. The focusing of this light into a small spot causes a rapid temperature rise, resulting in device function. The output lens of the dual lens system is sealed into a metal shell using patented Glass-Ceramic sealing technology. In addition to providing hermeticity and a high pressure seal, the Glass-Ceramic, lens and metal shell material set presents an "Incompatibility Free" (no solders, glues, etc.) environment for the explosive powder. Various energetic materials have been successfully ignited in these devices, such as BNCP, ZPP, TiH1.65/KClO4 and Ti/KClO4. Both solid state and semiconductor laser sources have been used to ignite our devices. The laser initiator produces expanding hot gas to propel sliders, pistons in pyrovalves, piston motors or other devices actuated with expanding hot gas. Laser detonators can be used in a variety of applications, such as initiating the stage separation of rockets, the ejection of airplane seats and military weapons systems. Laser ignited units are superior to their electrically ignited counterparts because the laser systems are impervious to outside electromagnetic pulses and electrostatic discharges that can cause undesired ignition in electrically ignited systems. These adaptable devices can replace the electrically ignited systems used in various applications. PerkinElmer Optoelectronics has the unique capability of providing a complete laser ordnance system (diodes, drive electronics, and ordnance devices) by designing our laser ordnance devices to interface with high power InGaAs diodes manufactured by PerkinElmer Optoelectronics Canada. Both detonator and initiator configurations of laser ignited ordnance are available. The size and configuration of the device can be custom designed to meet your functional requirements. PerkinElmer manufactures laser ignited ordnance and high-power laser diodes in ISO 9001 qualified facilities. All other components used in the system are industry standard components.
