The MT8986AP is designed as one kind of multiple rate digital switch device that can be used in wide range of applications such as (1)Medium size digital switch matrices; (2)Hyperchannel switching (e.g., ISDN H0); (3)MVIP interface functions; (4)Serial bus control and monitoring; (5)Centralized voice processing systems; (6)Voice/Data multiplexer; (7)32 kbit/s channel switching. This device is pin compatible with the MT8980D and retains all of its functionality, and provides per-channel selection between variable and constant throughput delays.

Features of the MT8986AP are:(1)256 x 256 or 512 x 256 switching configurations; (2)8-bit or 4-bit channel switching capability; (3)Guarantees frame integrity for wideband channels; (4)Automatic identification of ST-BUS/GCI interfaces; (5)Accepts serial streams with data rates up to 8.192 Mb/s; (6)Rate conversion from 2.048 Mb/s to 4.096 or 8.192 Mb/s and vice-versa; (7)Programmable frame offset on inputs; (8)Per-channel three-state control; (9)Per-channel message mode; (10)Control interface compatible to Intel/Motorola CPUs; (11)Low power consumption.
