The NS16552V is a dual version of the NS16550AF universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter(UART).The two serial channels are completely independent except for a common CPU interface and crystal input.

Features of the NS16552V are:(1)dual independent UARTs;(2)capable of running all existing NS16552V software;(3)after reset,all registers are identical to the 16450 register set;(4)read and write cycle time of 84 ns;(5)in the FIFO mode transmitter and receiver are each buffered with 16-byte FIFOs to reduce the number of interrupts presented to the CPU;(6)holding and shift registers in the NS16552V mode eliminate the need for precise synchronization between the CPU and serial data;(7)adds or deletes standard asynchronous communication bits to or from the serial data;(8)independently controlled transmit,receive,line status,and data set interrupts;(9)programmable baud generators divide any input clock by 1 to 2^16-1 and generate the 16*clock;(10)MODE control functions;(11)fully programmable serial-interface characteristics;(12)false start bit detection;(13)complete status reporting capabilities;(14)TRI-STATE TTL drive for the data and control buses;(15)line break generation and detection;(16)internal diagnoistic capabilities;(17)full prioritized interrupt system controls.
