The R68560A is designed as muiti-protocol communications controller (MPCC) which interfaces a single serial communications channel to a 68008/68000 microcomputer-based system using ether asynchronous or synchronous protocol.
The R68560A has many features. The first one is full duplex synchronous/asynchronous receiver and transmitter. The second one is implement IBM binary synchronous communications (BSC) in two coding formats: ASCII and EBCDIC. The third one is supports other synchronous character-oriented protocols (COP), such as six-bit BSC, X3.28K, ISO IS1745, ECMA-16, etc. The fourth one is asynchronous and isochronous modes. The fifth one is modem handshake interface. The sixth one is high speed serial data rate (DC to 4MHz). The seventh one is internal oscillator and baud rate generator with programmable rate. The eighth one is crystal or TTL level clock input and buffered clock output (8MHz). The ninth one is direct interface to 68008/68000 asynchronous bus.
