The R68C552 is designed as dual asynchronous communications interface adapter (DACIA) which provides an easily implemented, program controlled two-channel interface between 16-bit microprocessor-based systems and serial communication data sets and modems.
The R68C552 has many features. The first one is low power CMOS N-well silicon gate technology. The second one is two independent full duplex channels with buffered receivers and transmitters. The third one is data set/modem control functions. The fourth one is internal baud rate generator with 15 programmable baud rates (50 bps to 38400 bps). The fifth one is program-selectable internally or externally controller receiver and transmitter bit rates. The sixth one is programmable word lengths, number of stop bits, and parity bit generation and detection. The seventh one is programmable interrupt control. The eighth one is edge detect for DCD, DSR and CTS. The ninth one is program selectable echo mode for each channel. The tenth one is compare register.
