According to the Moore’s Law, flash memory will be substituted for hard disk with its better cost performance to occupy the memory market in short term. We may think about hard disk which now is known as historical relic.
Sandisk released a king of high-speed CF card having the capacity of 128G featured with shock-resistant, water-proof and moisture proof for personal users. From the point of capacity and performance, this CF memory chip can be utilized as hard disk in spite of its crazy price for 1500 dollars. Our specialists are so optimistic to see hard disk to be phased out by flash memory.
The number of transistors on an integrated circuit is doubled and so as the processing speeds of CPU with price dropping in half every 18 months. This is what we called Moore’s Law which has been proved again and again. Seven or eight years ago, a hard disk of 8G or 15G is regarded as “huge hard disk” while now 1000G has becomes the mainstream for desktop with the price under one thousand Yuan.
At that time, flash memory is well known by its small size, high speed and shock-resistant. It is widely adopted in recording pen, digital camera and mobile phone and so forth with capacity limited in hundreds M.
Later on, it appears solid-state disk which takes flash memory as storage medium. This kind of disk has advantages of flash memory but it is too expensive. A solid-state disk with 128G costs 2000 to 3000 Yuan which is 10 times of common disk.
We will see Moore’s Law will be continuously effecting. It was predicted by Barry Eggers that popularity of flash memory as data storage tool will be the trend in 2011 and its speed can be 100 times of traditional hard disk; despite of high price, the cost is dropping all the way.
Maybe it is time we wave our hands and say farewell to traditional hard disk. The related integrated circuit is A20P-CD.
