A single-output white LED driver IC has been released by Allegro MicroSystems for backlighting applications. A current-mode boost converter is connected with an internal power switch and one current sink on this IC. Its range of power supply is from 4.5 to 40V. It is used to accommodate start/stop, cold-crank and load-dump requirements.
The device can operate above the AM radio band with the 2MHz switching frequency of the boost converter. Furthermore, whether there is the fault conditions or not can be detected by the device, because it has a fault flag pin which is alerting the controller to possible fault conditions. If the fault happens, the fault flag can be used as part of a circuit to driven an external p-type FET to disconnect the input supply from the system in the event of a fault.
The built-in protection will guard against the output short-circuit and overvoltage, open or shorted diode, open or shorted LED pin, shorted boost switch or inductor, shorted current-setting resistor, and IC overtemperature. A dual-level cycle-by cycle current limit function provides soft start and protects the internal current switch against high-current overloads. Both eMSOP-10 and eTSSOP-16 packages are suitable for the A8513.
