The CMOS Image Sensors Market has Rebounded

Compared to $5.8bn in 2011, the sales of CMOS sensors will grow 8% to $6.3bn this year. This is the first back-to-back annual sales gain for CMOS image sensor since 2006. Because of the inventory corrections in camera cell phones, CMOS image sensor sales declined16% in the 2009 downturn and fell 14% in 2007.

The sales of CMOS image sensor is expected to reach $10.8bn in 2016, so the CAGR will be 13% over the next five years. The sales of CMOS image sensor increased because of the camera phones and the introduction of embedded digital cameral in portable notebooks and personal computer monitors; however, when these market driving applications become saturated and matured in the middle if the last decade, the growth rate of CMOS image sensor began to decline.

The explosive growth of camera phones had attracted many suppliers and manufacturers to the business; therefore, the market was bogged down by an oversupply of CMOS image sensors. A number of manufacturers decided to close or sell their image sensor business, when growth stalled five years ago. Moreover, the competition between different suppliers becomes fiercer when the new applications cause growth. The large companies will expand the fab capacity to 300mm wafer.

The automotive industry become the new growth point of CMOS image sensor application with $1.8bn in 2016, or about 17% of the market’s total dollar volume that year; however, the camera cellphones are still the largest CMOS image sensor application in 2016 with sales expected to be $5.4bn or 50% of the revenues overall.
