The 74181 is designed as 4-bit high speed parallel arithmetic logic unit (ALU). Controlled by the four functio select inputs (S0-S3) and the mode control input (M), it can perform all the 16 possible logic operations on active high or active low operands.
The three features of the 74181. (1)Provides 16 arthmetic operations: ADD, SUBTRACT, COMPARE, DOUBLE, plus 12 other arithmetic operations. (2)Provides all 16 logic operations of two variables: exclusive-OR, compare, AND, NAND, NOR, OR, plus 10 other logic operations. (3)Full lookahead carry for high speed arithmetic operation on long words. Those are all the main features.
Some absolute maximum ratings of the 74181 have been concluded into several points as follow. (1)Its supply voltage would be 7.0V. (2)Its input voltage would be from -0.5V to +5.5V. (3)Its input current would be from -30mA to +5mA. (4)Its voltage applied to output in high output state would be from -0.5V to +Vcc. (5)Its operating free-air temperature range would be from 0°C to 70°C. It should be noted that stresses above those listed in absolute maximum ratings may cause permanent damage to device.
