The 8251A is designed as programmable communication interface for data communication with intel's microprocessor families such as MCS-48, 80, 85, and 8251A is used as a peripheral device and is programmed by the CPU to operate using virtually any serial data transmission technique presently in use (including IBM "bi-sync").
8251A has many features. The first one is synchronous and asynchronous operation. The second one is synchronous 5-8 bit characteristics, internal or external character synchronization; automatic sync insertion. The third one is asynchronous 5-8 bit characters; clock rate - 1, 16 or 64 times baud rate; break character generation; 1, or 2 stop bits; false start bit detection; automatic break detect and handing. The fourth one is synchronous baud rate would be DC to 64K baud. The fifth one is asynchronous baud would be DC to 19.2K baud. The sixth one is full-duplex, double-buffered transmitter and receiver. The seventh one is error detection - parity, overrun and framing. The eighth one is compatible with an extended range of intel mocroprocessors. The ninth one is 28-pin DIP package. The tenth one is all inputs and outputs are TTL compatible. The last one is it would be available in EXPRESS and military versions. That are all the main features.
Some absolute maximum ratings and DC characteristics of 8251A have been concluded into several points as follow. The first one is about its ambinet temperature under bias which would be from 0°C to 70°C. The second one is about its storage temperature range which would be from -65°C to +150°C. The third one is about its voltage on any pin with respect to ground which would be from -0.5V to +7V. The fourth one is about its power dissipation which would be 1W. It should be noted that stressing the device beyond the "absolute maximum ratings" may cause permanent damage. These are stress ratings only.
