The MC68882RC16A is one member of the MC68882 family which is designed as the HCMOS enhanced floating-point coprocessor device that implements th IEEE standard for binary floating-point Arithmetic for use with the Motorla M68000 family of microprocessors. And upgrade of the MC68881, MC68882RC16A is pin and software compatible with an optimized microprocessor unit (MPU) interface providing in excess of 1.5 times the performance of the MC68881.

Features of the MC68882RC16A are:(1)eight general-purpose floating-point data registers, each supporting a full 80-bit extended-precision real data format;(2)a 67-bit arithmetic unit to allow very fast calculations, with intermediate precision greater than the extended-precision format;(3)a 67-bit barrel shifter for high-speed shifting operations;(4)reduced coprocessor interface overhead to increase throughput;(5)46 instructions, including 35 arithmetic operations;(6)full conformation to the IEEE 754 standard, including all requirements and suggestions.
