The SN54LS640 is designed as octal bus transceiver for asynchronous two-way communication between data buses. SN54LS640 transmits data from A bus to the B bus or from the B bus to the A bus depending upon the level at the direction control (DIR) input. The enable input can be used to disable so the buses are effectively isolated.
SN54LS640 has five features. (1) Rated at Iol of 48mA. (2) Bi-directional bus transceivers in high density 20-pin packages. (3) Hysteresis at bus inputs improves noise margins. (4) Choice of true or inverting logic. (5) Choice of 3-state or open collector outputs. That are all the main features.
Some absolute maximum ratings of SN54LS640 have been concluded into several points as follow. (1) Its supply voltage would be 7V. (2) Its input voltage would be 7V for all inputs and would be 5.5V for I/O ports. (3) Its operating free-air temperature range would be from -55°C to 125°C.
