External PNP transistor Q3 and catch diode Q2 (types not critical) are used with Fairchild μA78S40 switching regulator so no pin of IC substrate has voltage more negative than substrate, which is grounded. Efficiency is 84% with 200-mA load. Output voltage ripple is 50 mV but can be reduced by increasing value of C0.-B. J. Apfel and D. B.
